The Playbill Collector (TPC): How did you get your start in theater?
Ryan Phillips (RP): Ever since pre-school, I had been in choir. I loved singing and did it pretty much everywhere I went. I was very fortunate to have parents that encouraged such obnoxious behavior, so I kept singing and kept doing choir. In elementary school, we had a field trip to a local high school production of GUYS AND DOLLS. I loved it so much that when I got to middle school the next year, I auditioned for the fall musical, THE MUSIC MAN. I was cast as Ewart Dunlop, one of the ice cream quartet singers.
TPC: You are currently playing, Lumiere, in BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. What was your audition song?
RP: “Be Our Guest”! I’ve wanted to play Lumiere for a long time. This was actually my third time auditioning for the role. “Be Our Guest” was the only thing casting and the creatives wanted to hear me sing.
TPC: What’s your favorite moment of the show?
RP: I love the song “Human Again.” To me, this show is about hope. Against all odds and in the most difficult of times, there is always hope. “Human Again” accentuates that theme. It’s one of the most beautiful songs in the show, and it’s one that the audience truly connects to.
TPC: What can you tell us about the exquisite costumes?
RP: I can tell you they look the way they do because of the amount of detail and maintenance that’s put into them. There are so many intricacies that the audience has no idea about. My jacket is embroidered with actual gold coil. It’s as beautiful as it is heavy.
TPC: Do you have any “before the show” rituals?
RP: Not really, but there is an order of things that I do to get ready. If I go out of order or if I skip something, it throws off my energy and I feel weird for the rest of the show.
TPC: What’s your favorite city you’ve been to so far on the tour?
RP: So far, San Antonio. The River Walk is so amazing, and the Majestic Theater is one of the most beautiful theaters I’ve ever seen. Also, honorable mention to Rapid City, South Dakota. We definitely didn’t get to spend enough time there!
TPC: What’s your favorite role you’ve ever had?
RP: I’ve had a lot of fun on stage in my life, but never more than I’m having right now. Lumiere is one of the most fun, intricate, and honest roles I’ve ever gotten to play. I’ve wanted to play him for so long. It’s more artistically fulfilling than I ever could’ve imagined.
TPC: What is your dream role?
RP: George in SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE, the Emcee in CABARET, and pretty much any role in THE BOOK OF MORMON.
