Interview with dancer Tiffany Smith

“California Ballet’s production of, ‘The Nutcracker’ leaps onto the stage of the San Diego Civic Theatre in America’s favorite holiday tradition.” Below is an interview with Tiffany Smith, one of the dancers from the upcoming production!

The Playbill Collector (TPC): When did you first start dancing?
Tiffany Smith (TS): I started dancing when I was three years old.

TPC: When did you start working with the California Ballet Company?
TS: I joined the California Ballet in 2015 and currently am on my third season.

TPC: What roles will you playing this year in THE NUTCRACKER?
TS: This year I will be dancing the Sugar Plum Fairy, Snow Queen, Dew Drop, Mirlitons, Snowflakes, and Waltz of Flowers. Every role is so different, I love getting to play a diverse range of characters each time I go on stage.

TPC: How large is the cast?
TS: There are about 30 professionals and over 100 kids in this production! I love that there are so many kids involved. When I was little, nutcracker rehearsals were so much fun for me, that’s when I really began to fall in love with ballet. It’s nostalgic to see that now as an adult.

TPC: What is the most exciting element of the show for you?
TS: Performing with the symphony is my favorite part of the show. Even after years of performing The Nutcracker, I still get giddy when I hear them tuning their instruments.

TPC: What is your dream role?
TS: The Sugar Plum Fairy has always been a dream role of mine and I am excited to be performing it this year.

TPC: Is there anything else you want the audience to know about the show?
TS: In the story the main character (Clara) is a little girl who dreams up this magical land called the Kingdom of Sweets, that you are in charge of. I enjoy getting to use my imagination like a child and decide what kind of fairy I want to be.
