Once upon a time, in a swamp far away, there lived an ogre named Shrek. He loved his solitude and was frustrated when it was taken away by an invasion of annoying fairy tale characters. They were banished from their kingdom by the evil Lord Farquaad. Shrek wanted to save his home so he made a deal with Farquaad: Shrek had to rescue Princess Fiona to be Farquaad’s bride.
Donkey played by Cornelius Jones Jr. was a fantastic comic relief. His acting was exuberant. However, in my humble opinion, you should see SHREK just for the joy that Lord Farquaad (Marc Ginsburg) brings. Although he is supposed to be evil, he was charming, lovable and hilarious. His voice was strong and his dancing was silly. He was a delight to watch and it seemed the audience agreed with me the night I was there.
The ensemble numbers were amusing as well. “Story of My Life” was a highlight. All the fairy tale characters danced and sang up a storm. They got the crowd excited and roped them into the show right off the bat. Bravo to Director/Choreographer David F.M. Vaughn who made it all gel together.
