“Avenue Q” is in short, a dirty muppet show that stems from “Sesame Street”. During the musical we meet a mix of muppets and humans who all live on the same street. The main character, Princeton, has set out to find his purpose in life. The story would not be complete without him meeting a girl and some obstacles along the way.
Princeton/Rod was played by understudy, Jed Resnick. He had a charming voice and was fun to watch. Veronica Kuehn played Kate Monster and Lucy. Although she had an incredible voice, her performance was very rote. It would have been nice to see her show some spark instead of just hitting her marks. Jason Jacoby who played a slew of characters did a noteworthy job distinguishing parts and creating different personas.
Since the show has moved from Broadway to The New World Stages Off-Broadway it seems a bit dated. Although it is set in present day, the cast had a hard time making it exciting. When I saw it back in 2004 it was the hottest thing in town. The songs are catchy and most of the show is sung through so it goes by quickly. For those of you who enjoy the humor of “South Park”, this show is for you. For more information check out: http://www.avenueq.com
