DEAR EVAN HANSEN is a new musical written by Pasek and Paul. The show focuses on Evan who becomes involved in a family tragedy of a boy from his school. That sounds vague but truly, that is what you should know going into it. That way, you can allow yourself to ponder what all is going on. Otherwise, I would be giving away too much and I can assure you, this is a show that will leave you thinking about it for days after you see it.
Although I had seen a video of, “Waving Through a Window”, I was not aware of the absolute power and insane range that Ben Platt possesses. At only 23 years old, he carries the show with his beautifully crafted character portrayal. If he does not win the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical, I will be shocked. He deserves it.
The show has so many layers to it. There are elements of love, grief, humor, shock value and so much more. The music is beautiful and the small cast of eight people worked perfectly together. My advice is to get tickets fast because once the buzz is spreading, it is going to sell fast. It’s a show that you won’t want to miss.
