If you are looking for a campy, cheesy musical DISASTER: A 70’s Disaster Movie Musical is just that. Seth Rudetsky wrote and stars in the show at St. Luke’s Theatre. We find ourselves onboard Manhattan’s first floating casino in the summer of 1979. Little do the passengers know, the night will turn into a disaster. Songs include Knock on Wood, Sky High, Don’t Bring Me Down and more.
Matt Farcher who plays Chad has a great voice that works well with the time period. His counterpart Marianne played by Haven Burton is a sweet, blonde bombshell. The older married couple who sang the famous Orleans song “Still the One” was the most charming part of the play. It brought tears to my eyes.
Unfortunately, the rest of the show seemed below the bar. I felt as though I was at a high school production where costumes and set pieces were created on the fly and actors were sub par. Many of the audience members giggled and enjoyed the night. Sorry to say, I wasn’t a big fan.
