“Always look on the bright side of life.” Lighthearted yet wise words from a musical. “Monty Python’s Spamalot” hit Minneapolis for a quick three show run this weekend at the Orpheum. It is an adaptation of the 1975 movie “Monty Python and the Holy Grail”. Both the movie and musical tell of King Arthur and his knights as they embark on a search for the grail. As they are on their journey, they encounter many odd obstacles.
In 2005 my family and I saw the original Broadway cast in New York City. The show was stocked with big name actors and ended up winning multiple Tony Awards including Best Musical. The touring cast did a splendid job of re-creating the Broadway magic and our audience loved it! They were engaged in many ways: laughing, clapping, speaking characters names out loud before they were announced and one lucky audience member even had his 15 seconds of fame on the stage.
The first act was paced so well that I could hardly believe when the curtain dropped for intermission. That rarely happens and was due to all the song, dance and comedy which sped up the time. Many well known songs come from the show such as “The Song That Goes Like This”, “Find Your Grail”, “The Diva’s Lament” and “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life” (as mentioned above).
For me, you can’t go wrong with a rousing tap dance, great harmonies and a fun sing-a-long after the bows. “Spamalot” had all of that and more. It was entertaining and a wonderful way to spend my Friday night. If you get a chance, I would suggest seeing it.
