SUMMER: THE DONNA SUMMER MUSICAL is an exciting world-premiere show taking place now at the La Jolla Playhouse. The show tells of Donna Summer from her childhood in Boston through her international stardom. She was known as the, “Queen of Disco”. The show boasts over twenty of Summer’s classic hits such as, “Bad Girls”, “Hot Stuff” and “Love to Love You, Baby.”
Sergio Trujillo did an incredible job with the choreography. My only complaint is that I wish there were more ensemble numbers to showcase the wonderful dancing! The tile role of Donna Summer was played by three women. My favorite of the three was, “Diva Donna” LaChanze. She had a superb voice and was easy to like.
The audience loved the show. Many people were dressed up in disco outfits and sang along to songs. This show is fantastic for people who are fans of Donna Summer’s music. I’m rating this show, “that is the question” because if you aren’t a fan of her music, you may not like it. I knew a handful of songs but not all and still enjoyed it. It’s just a matter of taste.
