54 Below, Broadway’s Supper Club, offers nights of high class food, specialized drinks and lovely music. Boasting two to three shows a night, this is the place to see Broadway performers shine.
The Sound of Their Music: Rodgers & Hammerstein is currently playing a few shows at 54 Below. Sierra Boggess, Christine Andreas, Brian Charles Rooney and Patricia Racette performed on February 16th when I attended (the cast changes). They sang songs from SOUTH PACIFIC, THE KING AND I, CAROUSEL and THE SOUND OF MUSIC. One thing is for sure, Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote catchy, smart, beautiful music. Of the four performers, Christine stood out to me. She had the spunk and pep of Judy Garland. Christine was quirky, playful and it was very apparent she was completely in her element.
The three piece band comprised of a piano, standing bass and drums were perfect. They sounded superb but didn’t take away from the performers themselves. An emcee gave us background information on the composers and musicals themselves between songs. There were side screens which displayed pictures which allowed for not only a fun night of music, but an an informative one as well. The audience ate up every minute of the hour long show.
