Growing up in Minnesota, seeing A CHRISTMAS CAROL at the Guthrie Theater is a tradition. With its lavish set, grand costumes and large ensemble; it’s a wonderful production and holiday favorite. Now that I’m living in San Diego, I had to find a new production to see and the adaption that the Cygnet Theatre produced, was scaled back but just as marvelous.
Walking into the theater, the actors were already on stage. They asked the audience to participate in singing “The Twelve Days of Christmas”. It allowed people to get in the mood for the show and loosen up. Once the play started, I knew it would be a good one. The seven person cast was phenomenal. Each actor played multiple parts (aside from Scrooge), sang lovely harmony and played a variety of instruments. This version also involved pantomime and puppetry which added a new element to the classic tale.
Each actor was very committed to the show and the parts they played. Their costumes reflected Victorian England. I’ve never seen the show done with so much music. They added some classic Christmas songs along with new lyrics. It added a spice that was welcomed by all.
If you enjoy the tale of Scrooge, this is a fantastic version not to be missed. A CHRISTMAS CAROL is running now through December 28th. More information here: http://cygnettheatre.com/
