Many people living in Minnesota hibernate in the winter. My friends go to work and then head home to bundle up and relax inside. How do you pull people out to do things? You have to spark people’s imagination. Get them to have fun and live a little! Here’s a grand idea, invite them to a show where they can wear their pajamas! Hence “The Ultimate Pajama Party” at the Lab Theater in the warehouse district of Minneapolis. Creator and Executive Producer, Tammy Hauser states “This is the party show experience that I created for women, to give them an excuse to laugh, play and create new memories together.”
The show is set up to be very interactive. The doors open at 6:30pm and you are able to choose your table, grab a drink at the tiki bar, snack on some appetizers, and take your picture wearing fun costumes. The show which includes games and activities starts around 7pm. It is full of audience participation and is a rousing time. At 8:30 there is a dance party featuring the local band, Belladiva.
The space: Walking in I was blown away by the beauty of the Lab Theater. It was my first experience there and what a delight! You enter from the top and walk down the stairs. Peering over I couldn’t help but adore the white hanging lanterns, beautiful drapery, exposed brick, comfy couches, and colorful set up. It was breathtaking. Later I learned the space went under a huge transformation all due to Joshua Barnd.
The cast: There were seven main actors and a crew of four “cabana boys”. The cast interacted with the audience a lot. Again, it was not a typical show. It was more like a party. Yes, there was a theme of celebrating their friend Lisa amidst some light acting, singing, and dancing but it was all in fun. The cast told stories but also came into the audience and spoke candidly with everyone.
The games: We played diet bingo where you won if you or your partner had participated in that particular diet at any point in your life. There was a puppet show where two audience members were called up to act out a scene from the book “50 Shades of Grey”. Three women participated in the “Kar-dash-Ian” where they had to strut their stuff while holding shopping bags, a martini, and take a 10 second photo shoot. There were a few other games but you will have to see the show to learn more!
The dance party: Belladiva was incredible and may have been the best part of the night for me. They played hits such as “Single Ladies”, “It’s Raining Men”, “Rolling in the Deep” and many more. My friend Kristina and I had a great time “grooving” to their awesome songs.
All in all it was a really fun night. If you are looking for a night out with your girlfriends to relax, enjoy some entertainment and dance, this is a wonderful show for you!
