Favorite musical?

People ask me all the time “what is your favorite musical?”   Now that’s a loaded question!  How do you pick a few or even worse, how do you narrow it down to one?  When asked the two that I tend to say the most are “Big River” and “The Last Five Years”.  These shows hold a special place in my heart.  However, there are others that I love in different ways.  Let me expand a bit…

Sondheim is in a category of his own.  My top three Sondheim shows are (in no particular order):

  • Sweeney Todd
  • Company
  • Into the Woods

The classic “musical”.  These shows have dance, acting, and singing down to a tee:

  • Aida
  • Newsies
  • Wicked
  • Anything Goes
  • Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

I tend to favor the “happy, uplifting” musicals.  However, I can appreciate a dark one (sometimes).  Sweeney is by no means uplifting but Sondheim wrote incredible lyrics that make it a hit.  Recently I saw “Cabaret”.  The show itself is weighty and talks about many issues surrounding WW2.  The music and story line are very touching and I loved every minute of it.

I’ve been lucky to see many shows in my 25 years of life and look forward to continuing to see more.  These shows are just some of my top one’s that I would suggest to friends and family.

Now my question is, what is YOUR favorite musical and/or musicals?
