Tis the season for classic holiday themed shows of merriment and wonder. THE NUTCRACKER is a favorite that audiences young and old can enjoy. The well known music by Tchaikovsky tells the story of a party, a battle, a snow kingdom and a kingdom of sweets through the eyes of a young girl, Clara. This year the San Diego Civic Theatre hosted the California Ballet which was accompanied by the San Diego Symphony. Each year the music is breathtaking and this year was no exception to the rule.
Jaya Dhand who played Clara seemed to float across the stage. She was sweet and charming. Cory Stearns, who danced with the Sugar Plum Fairy, was incredibly talented. His strength during his lift’s, grace during pirouette’s and smile were a perfect combination. The second act is always mesmerizing with fun dance numbers and interesting characters. The Russian number and Mother Ginger who had all the little kids under her skirt, were stand out performances. The dancers were dressed in costumes ranging from party clothes, gingerbread people, flowers, reindeer and other whimsical beings. The multi-colored tutus were winsome as well.
All in all it was a lovely night enjoyed by the entire audience. Although THE NUTCRACKER has closed, the California Ballet is performing SLEEPING BEAUTY this spring. For more information check out: www.californiaballet.org
