Video of the week for 2/4/13

url

Bless the Lord” is from the musical “Godspell” composed by Stephen Schwartz.  The show debuted on Broadway in 1976 and and is based on a series of parables from the Gospel of Matthew.  My sister introduced me to this song last summer and after hearing Shoshana Bean sing this rendition, I was blown away!  In the past I sang with the Twin Cities Community Gospel Choir and currently sing on the worship team with my church.  We do a lot of gospel and hip hop songs so this tune struck a chord with me.

The lyrics in this song are absolutely beautiful.  I’ve attached them below so that you can read along when listening.  Songs are brought to life when they have good vocalists to back them up.  I’m not sure that anyone could argue that Shoshana has pipes!  A few of my favorite notes and phrases:

1:13- A lovely riff
1:48 – The word “youth”
1:55- Awesome “ooh”
2:38-2:56- That phrase in incredible!

No further explanation is needed.  Listen to the song with your eyes closed first.  Then go back and listen while reading the lyrics.  Enjoy!

Lyrics:
Oh bless the Lord my soul
His praise to thee proclaimed
And all that is within me join
To bless His holy name
Oh yeah
Oh bless the Lord my soul
His mercies bear in mind
Forget not all His benefits
The Lord to thee is kind

He will not always chide
He will with patience wait
His wrath is ever slow
To rise
Oh bless the Lord
And ready to abate
And ready to abate
Oh yeah!
Oh bless the lord
Bless the lord my soul
Oh bless the lord my soul!

He pardons all thy sins
Prolongs thy feeble breath
He heals thine infirmities

And ransoms thee from death

He clothes thee with his love
Upholds thee with his truth
And like an eagle he renews
The vigor of thy youth

And bless His holy name
Whose grace hath made thee whole
Whose love and kindness crowns
Thy days
Oh bless the lord
Bless the lord my soul
Oh bless the lord my soul!

Bless the lord my soul
Oh bless the lord my soul!
Bless the lord my soul
Oh bless the lord my soul!
Bless the lord, bless the lord
My soul!
Bless the lord my soul!
