Jason Robert Brown wrote the music and lyrics for one of my favorite musicals “The Last Five Years”. Recently I was given the libretto and CD of “Parade” which is another one of his incredible creations. When I heard “All the Wasted Time” I knew it was one that would stick with me.
The show is complex and this song is almost at the very end of the play. When we arrive at this moment, we know that Leo has not fully appreciated his wife Lucille throughout their marriage. He finally comes to the realization that she is an incredible woman and he has been missing the blessing of having her in his life. The duet they share is a sweet love song. The instrumentation and lyrics are so poetic that it may in fact bring you to tears (it has for me).
My suggestion: Close your eyes and listen. Let everything sink in. Notice the phrasing, sounds and inflections. Repeat at least two times if not more.
