Alright so this may not be a true musical theater song but it is pretty awesome so I had to share. My song choice this week is “Gumption & Guts” by Bella Ruse. I discovered them last year and am delighted that they are coming to Minneapolis on May 31st. They will be playing at the lake Harriet bandshell for an outdoor concert you don’t want to miss!
Bella Ruse’s website says it all “Bella Ruse’s combination of airy folk and crunchy pop transforms rooms into secret gardens and paints pictures of invading bombardiers, salty sea love, and super glued hearts. Surrounded by a laboratory of instruments – typewriter, suitcase organ, glockenspiel, and kazoos – singer Kay Gillette’s antique voice and Joseph Barker’s mournful guitar twist and twirl and dip and dive and carry you deep down the rabbit-hole into their magical musical world. They’ve been traveling the country in a van powered by vegetable oil for two years…” How can you not fall in love with the duo after that intro?
A few reasons why I love this song:
- The lyrics are cute and I think the word gumption is a wonderful one that should be used more in modern day language. I especially like the bridge (2:10-2:32). Hint: bridges tend to be my favorite part of songs.
- I adore the use of multiple somewhat odd instruments.
- Did I tell you the couple is married?! So sweet!
Anyways, I suggest you listen to their entire “Kuhzoo” album. A few other favorites of mine are: Darling, An Animal A Natural, Complicated Rhythm and The Kazoo Song. Also, if you live in the Twin Cities, go see them in concert. I guarantee it will be a fun time!
